Cornet Obolensky, the phenomenon of ‘never before’ (courtesy of http://cornetobolensky.com)
Never before has a stallion been so successful. Never before have we seen a stallion dominating all the international events with his first crop. Already 21 (!!) of Cornet Obolensky´s oldest offspring have advanced to the highest level of show jumping. Never before has a stallion been so prepotent in passing on his talent for top-level sport.

From the moment
Cornet Obolensky set foot in the world of breeding, riders as well as breeders have been fascinated by this charming grey. At the 2001 Westphalian stallion inspection the audience watched breathlessly as this product of the golden combination Clinton x Heartbreaker just seemed to flirt with the jumps. In the 30-day test this phenomenal athlete received a 9.24 score for jumping aspects and a 10 for free jumping.

From the moment Cornet Obolensky set foot in the world of breeding, riders as well as breeders have been fascinated by this charming grey.

Once the stallion was teamed up with Marco Kutscher in the saddle the admiration for Cornet Obolensky´s jumping talent simply rocketed. The combination qualified for the Bundeschampionat´s finals with scores others can only dream of. With a casual ease they conquered the world´s most difficult courses as if it were child´s play.

Cornet Obolensky´s first crop of sons saw the immediate approval of top-class stallions Cristallo I (1.60m classes with Henrik von Eckermann), Cornado NRW (1.60m classes with Marcus Ehning) and Conte Bellini (the absolute revelation of the 2013 World Cup Finals in Göteborg under the Latvian rider Kristaps Neretieks). And there is Daniel Deusser´s phenomenal ace Cornet d´Amour, who also stems from Cornet Obolensky´s first crop. In 2013 this combination won the German Champion´s title and seized individual fourth place at the European Championships in Herning. Cornet Obolensky´s first crop also produced Marco Kutcher´s current top horse Cornet´s Cristallo and Emanuele Gaudiano´s EC star Cocoshynsky.

And it´s still early days for this already unparalleled career in the worldwide breeding scene of show jumping horses. At this stage Cornet Obolensky has at least 32 offspring competing at 1.60m level and we´re still counting. All these horses will be turning ten or eleven in 2014. What does this hold for the future?

Never before has a stallion so prominently shown to be in a class of his own. Never before has a stallion been such a proven progenitor for passing on his talent to his offspring.

PictureDarco
Darco is a legendary showjumpig & breeding stallion, who competed at the top level of show jumping and has produced over 3000 foals in his breeding carear many of which have become succesfull showjumpers. Once again, Darco’s story, is the story of an exceptional broodmare - in this case, his grand-dam, Atoucha. Born in 1959 in Holland the mare was purchased by Fons Pauwels in 1960. Mr Pauwels was looking for a real ‘all-rounder’, a horse for both work and play. And this she did - working in the fields and in her ‘spare’ time, competing in dressage, showjumping and eventing competitions. She was twice - in 1968 and 1970 - the Belgian Eventing champion for Rural Riders, and three times a competitor at the European Rural Championships. According to her proud owner {and quoted in Leen Devocht’s excellent article on Darco in Breeding News, January 1997} her qualities were a legion: "very strong, healthy; not a single day of sickness in her book, an immense capacity for recovering; everlasting carefulness, even as an eventer; not a single refusal; always fighting and daring like a lioness - she could eat fences raw." Atoucha gave birth to eleven foals - ten fillies and one colt, Salvador, who went on to win the Berlin puissance. Darco’s dam, Ocoucha (by Codex} is the eldest daughter of Atoucha’s third daughter, Latoucha (by Faust}. Bred to one of the greatest of Belgian jumping stallions, Lugano van la Roche, Ocoucha produced Darco, who went on to prove himself a tough competitor on the international jumping scene.

Darco, who went on to prove himself a tough competitor on the international jumping scene with Ludo Phillippaerts. In 1988, Darco won his first World Cup qualifier, at Olympia, the following year, he won another Volvo for his rider, this time at s’Hertogenbosch. Darco and Ludo were sixth at the WEG in Stockholm, and 7th at the Barcelona Games. Ludo has this to say about the stallion: "Together with Darco, I began my international career. A horse to remain grateful to for the rest of my life. Darco really has everything it takes to make a unique super crack, as a showjumper as well as a sire. Horses of this outstanding quality will remain the great exceptions in the horse breeding industry. I will never forget the fine intelligence he so often proved in the showjumping arena, where he always showed lots of power and stamina coming from his high-bred ancestors." "I got Darco when he was five years old – he was a breeding stallion. All my success was with Darco, and then he was breeding at my place, and I had many of his foals.

All his progeny seem to be very good, and there are lots of people in the area, who use Darco, and they also give me horses by Darco to ride. My father was a horse breeder and had horses when he was younger." "The mares from Darco are not really mares for competition, they are mares for breeding. There are not so many Darco mares in the sport, they look a little difficult to ride but they have quality and they produce very good foals. There are many stallions in Holland and Belgium and France that can breed good foals with Darco mares. It is not necessary to have a particular stallion." Ludo Phillippaerts has had amazing success with offspring from Darco icluding his son Parco who is also showing himself to be a succesfull breeding stallion. In the WBFSH standings for 2013, Darco finished 7th, and 3rd in 2012. His most famous offspring is Otterongo who just missed out on an individual medal at the Sydney Olympic Games. Darco is a rather solid type and cross best over elegant mares with lots of blood Darco is one of the most succesfull BWP stallions of all time and was awarded their highest honour of "Ambassador" of the BWP studbook, he was also the best sire in the world according to the WBFSH ranking for sporthorses in 2007.

PictureRamiro
Over a period of of thirty years, the "Preferent" G Ramiro Z's performance as a sporthorse and breeding sire has clearly earned him the well deserved titles 'Stallion of the Century' and "King of Sires." Bred in Holstein, born in Westfalia, licensed at Neumünster, Ramiro Z was an international performer under Fritz Ligges, a stallion that has had a far reaching influence on the greatest acheiving sports horses of today. Ramiro was one of the first Holstein stallions to actually appear in competition unlike many others of that era. During his own sporting career he had numerous wins at all levels of show jumping including Nations Cups, Puissance (jumping over 2.2 metre) and in international Grand Prix competition.

Ramiro was the most popular progenitor of the Anglo Arab stallion "Ramzes" and by far the most frequented sire in Germany at that time. He stood at stud in Westfalia, Holstein, Zangersheide and Holland. Numerous sons and daughters conserve and pass on his valuable genes providing excellent rideability, movement and jumping talent. It comes therefore as no suprise that we find Ramiro's children and grandchildren at the top levels of showjumping and dressage today. A quick glance through the WBFSH rankings, some 15 years after his demise we can clearly identify the success of his descendants.
When Ramiro was presented for selection, he was described as the ideal type of the modern Holsteiner - strongly imprinted by his dam, a stallion of substance but lighter than the traditional Holsteiners of his time inheriting the strong topline of his , maternal grandfather the Thoroughbred stallion, Cottage Son xx. In movement Ramiro displayed a very good walk, a good trot, with an exceptional canter.RamiroOver a period of of thirty years, the "Preferent" G Ramiro Z's performance as a sporthorse and breeding sire has clearly earned him the well deserved titles 'Stallion of the Century' and "King of Sires." Secundus
Secundus was one of the few British based stallions to be awarded the prestigious status by KWPN in recognition of excellent performance and breeding results.
Secundus, one of the most influential sport horse stallions to stand in Britain, has died at the age of 28 at Balcormo Stud, Fife.
He has offspring representing him in all disciplines, but it is a sire of jumpers that he excelled. His sire, Rigoletto is best known as the producer of the International show jumpers and is a direct son of Ramzes, the founder of the "R" line in the Holstein breed. Rigolette was graded in both the Netherlands and German and was a very influential sire in both countries. His dam's sire, Porter, sired four graded sons and is best know as a sire of jumpers in the Netherlands where he stood most of his time at stud, having been born in Holstein. His sire, the Trakener, Polarfurst, was a noted progenito of broodmares and source of dressage talent.

Rigoletto became internationally famous with the success of Santa Monica with Alwin Schockemöhle in the saddle but his story is very much the story of the development of jumping breeding in Holland.

Ramzes
Ramzes was foaled in 1937 in Poland, he was by the Belgian bred Thoroughbred – and successful racehorse – Rittersporn, who was a grand-son of the great French Thoroughbred jumping sire, Le Sancy. This blood also runs in the veins of Wotan who jumped internationally with Hermann von Nagel in the 1930s and was a member of the German team that won the Rome Nations Cup three times in succession.

Ramzes was a medium framed, harmonious stallion with a very well set on neck, which was heavily muscled on the underside. He had a heavy poll, good width and depth of body and clean legs which were very good behind and light boned in front. His head was plain… In general it can be said that his Holsteiner offspring lacked size and were too fine… In conclusion it can be said that Ramzes had a positive effect on the old Holsteiner type. He sired a huge number of beautiful, supple riding horses. He decisively improved on the old, tremendous but high headed, flat backed jumping form. Doubtless because of his gaits, he produced hardly any dressage horses in Holstein. His offspring’s heads are not always the most beautiful.
